Woven Pants

Handwoven in Latvia

by Mailīšu Fabrika

On the way to somewhere special or nowhere in particular, individual woven threads brush against the skin. Texture rises and falls beneath the fingertips, moving softly across the body.

Soft and structured. Intricate, yet at ease.

Each pair of SKARULE Woven Pants begins with approximately seventeen hours of hand-weaving. From preparing and arranging the threads on the loom to weaving each section, the process demands precision, patience and a practiced hand. The work continues beyond the loom, with washing, cutting and sewing requiring a further ten hours of skilled work. Each pair represents approximately 27 hours of making, from the first woven thread to the finished garment.

The fabric is woven by Ilze Mailīte, a fourth-generation weaving artisan who grew up surrounded by the knowledge passed down through her family. What has travelled through generations finds new expression here, in a garment shaped by the meeting of traditional weaving and Sabīne Skarule’s design language.

The trousers themselves were never fully conceived on paper. They emerged through a process of experimentation, from woven samples, unexpected spaces and the possibilities discovered along the way. Sabīne saw something in the unfinished – in the loose threads and the intervals between woven sections – and allowed them to become part of the design. What might ordinarily be considered an interruption became its defining feature.

Rather than cutting a shape from a finished length of fabric, the woven sections are made for their intended purpose, with the aim of using the material as fully as possible.

A contemporary silhouette shaped for movement. Striding forward or sitting awhile. Taking the long way home.

Every body gives the garment its own rhythm. With every step, the weaving traces a quiet pattern across its wearer.

Made to give the body room to flow.
